Eastern Africa grabs the green hydrogen limelight at inaugural symposium
The green hydrogen ambitions of the eight nations that make up Eastern Africa received fresh momentum with the signing of a new MoU between the East African Community (EAC) and the German government. Announced at the region’s inaugural Green Hydrogen Symposium in Nairobi, the pact aims to support policy, capacity and innovation. |
Eastern Africa lags behind other regions due to fragmented policies, limited infrastructure and weak investor confidence, slowing its green hydrogen progress.
Yet, vast renewable resources and strategic trade access position Eastern Africa to emerge as a key green hydrogen hub.
Our take: Eastern Africa is no longer watching from the sidelines. With this new pact, the region is making a serious play to shape its green hydrogen future—though much will depend on what comes next.… Read more (2 min)
Green hydrogen’s growth hinges on innovative financing and collaboration, says Mphokolo Makara, Head of Energy and Infrastructure, East Africa, at Stanbic Bank. She emphasizes the need to align policy, market demand, and technology to unlock investment opportunities and scale this emerging clean energy sector across East Africa. |
With a new market, financial institutions such as Stanbic are focused first of all on understanding the technology, while also drawing on experience in renewables and product financing to eventually develop tailored instruments for green hydrogen.
Ms Makara underscores the importance of collaboration among policy makers, industrial users and financiers to build a viable market and accelerate green hydrogen deployment in the region.

In a landmark move for green finance in Africa, Morocco’s fertiliser producer OCP Group has secured $377 million from the French Development Agency (AFD) through a performance-based funding model linked to milestones in production capacity, green hydrogen and green ammonia development, and achieving water autonomy. |
AFD’s conditional funding model introduces measurable KPIs for hydrogen, signaling a shift in how green hydrogen projects across Africa may be evaluated and financed.
The deal highlights growing donor preference for impact-linked financing, potentially reshaping Africa’s hydrogen investment landscape with new expectations around climate, water and biodiversity indicators.
Our take: Africa’s hydrogen sector must be prepared not only to build infrastructure but also to deliver verifiable, long-term environmental and social outcomes aligned with sustainability goals.… Read more (2 min)
