This month’s G20 Summit in South Africa has injected new momentum into Africa’s green hydrogen drive, with the EU using the gathering to advance major Global Gateway commitments for hydrogen and other renewables. These include a $428.5 million package for green-hydrogen-related infrastructure, and a $17.9 billion renewables mobilisation.
Operating under the Team Europe approach, Global Gateway leverages grants, concessional loans and private capital, from the EU, its member states, and DFIs to drive renewable and hydrogen projects at continental scale.
The renewable energy investments are critical for scaling green hydrogen production, as reliable and abundant clean electricity is essential for powering electrolysers and building a sustainable hydrogen value chain.
