Power privatisation could boost Africa’s green hydrogen momentum

Mauritania has announced plans to fully privatise its power generation sector, enabling greater private sector involvement in energy infrastructure. The move marks a major policy shift, positioning private investment as a key driver of renewable energy expansion—an essential foundation for developing a robust green hydrogen economy.

  • Privatisation empowers Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to accelerate wind and solar deployment, providing the low-cost, clean electricity needed for competitive green hydrogen production and long-term viability.

  • Across Africa where slow-moving state utilities and underfunded power systems have stalled renewable energy growth, Mauritania’s full liberalisation is an attractive model, one where African countries take bold steps to unlock private capital for clean energy.

  • Our take: African countries aiming to accelerate their clean energy transitions may want to adopt similarly comprehensive reforms. By creating stable and predictable frameworks they can fully unlock private capital and compete globally in the green energy sector….. Read more (2 min)

Emirati state-owned renewable energy company Masdar has increased its Africa-focused staff count by 60% over the past year, according to LinkedIn data analysed by Hydrogen Rising. The hiring push has seen the company’s senior team on the continent grow to 16, signaling its intensifying interest in African green hydrogen markets.

  • The workforce growth could be linked to Masdar’s recent $1 billion green energy bond issuance, which aims to fund clean energy projects worldwide. This aligns with its broader $10 billion commitment to invest in renewable energy across Africa by 2030.

  • Masdar’s competitors are also in growth mode. Norwegian firm Scatec increased its workforce by 44.3%, while Dubai-headquartered AMEA Power grew by 24.4%.

  • Our take: Masdar’s substantial workforce expansion marks a strategic inflection point, reflecting its transition from pilot-phase initiatives to large-scale deployment and investment in renewable energy projects…..… Read more (2 min)
