The northwest African nation of Mauritania has signed two framework agreements to boost its green ammonia production. One is a $1.5 billion deal with Polish ammonia producer Hynfra to produce 100,000 tonnes annually, while the other with Chinese developer United Energy Group (UEG) targets one million tonnes a year for export. |
Mauritania joins a growing list of hydrogen-producing nations in Africa that are diversifying into green ammonia and other derivatives.
The collaboration with Asian and European developers reflects the country’s intent to widen its alliances and secure a foothold in the fast-evolving green ammonia market.

For the third time in as many months, Southern African countries are leading recruitment in the green hydrogen sector. The region accounts for 19 of the 27 roles available this month, spread across South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique and Namibia. By country, South Africa is the frontrunner, having 16 open roles. |
Norway-based renewable developer Scatec emerges as the single biggest recruiter, advertising 8 roles spread across several African countries.
The listings also point to an emerging trend of a growing demand for just energy transition specialists, with four dedicated roles now open.

Top hydrogen business leaders in South Africa earn the highest minimum annual salary among four countries analysed by Hydrogen Rising in collaboration with recruiter Shortlist. South African CEOs expect to earn at least $156,000 per year. Egypt offers the lowest minimum for such roles, at $102,000 annually. |
This is for the top leaders in mid-size renewable energy companies. Salary benchmarks are assembled in partnership with Shortlist, a leading recruitment agency in Africa.
With hydrogen still emerging as a separate sector, the analysis benchmarks sector leaders among renewables executives.

Amir Lebdioui, Director of University of Oxford’s TIDE Centre says, “The green hydrogen economy risks reinforcing historical extractive patterns and heightened exposure of developing nations to tech disruptions, while failing to deliver broad-based development benefits. Ultimately, green hydrogen is not a development guarantee but a policy choice.”
