G20 boosts Africa's hydrogen ambitions

Dear subscriber,

Global summits love grand speeches and big pledges, but for once, Africa’s hydrogen sector might actually cash the cheque. The G20 gathering in South Africa has tossed some real weight behind the continent’s clean-energy ambitions.

This month’s G20 Summit in South Africa has injected new momentum into Africa’s green hydrogen drive, with the EU using the gathering to advance major Global Gateway commitments for hydrogen and other renewables. These include a $428.5 million package for green-hydrogen infrastructure, and a $17.9 billion for renewables.

  • Operating under the Team Europe approach, Global Gateway leverages grants, concessional loans and private capital, from the EU, its member states, and DFIs to drive renewable and hydrogen projects at continental scale.

  • The renewable energy investments are critical for scaling green hydrogen production, as reliable and abundant clean electricity is essential for powering electrolysers and building a sustainable hydrogen value chain.

  • Our take: The investment lays a foundation for scaling Africa’s green hydrogen sector……..Read more (2 min)

Egypt’s ambitious green hydrogen economy stems from coordinated and integrated planning and governance, says Dr Mohamed Abo Eldahab. He notes that by linking renewable energy, production facilities and end users, while ensuring stakeholders work in sync, the country has enabled efficient project implementation.

  • Dr Abo Eldahab is General Manager of the Green Economy Department at the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), home to a significant portion of Egypt’s green hydrogen projects. He also serves on the country’s Supreme Council for Hydrogen and has been instrumental in modernising Egypt’s bunkering ecosystem to meet international standards.

  • In an interview, he acknowledges fragmentation as a key challenge facing green hydrogen in Africa and says other nations can learn from Egypt’s coordinated model to turn ambition into actionable projects.

A new electrolyser by Samsung E&A and Nel Hydrogen cuts production costs by producing high-pressure, ultra-pure hydrogen, reducing the need for compression and purification. Unlike conventional units whose output requires additional compression and purification, Compass H2‑P delivers 30 barg and 99.9995% purity.

  • Producing hydrogen at a high pressure directly from the electrolyser reduces or eliminates the need for additional compression, thereby saving energy and lowering costs while simplifying industrial-scale plant design.

  • With many industrial applications such as fuel cells, electronics and chemical synthesis requiring ultra-pure hydrogen, the high-purity output reduces downstream purification costs while ensuring performance and safety.

  • Our take: Compass H2‑P could be a game-changer for Africa, where abundant solar and wind often clash with grid instability ..… Read more (2 min)

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, says, “Extraordinary news from Joburg. 1.5 billion euro. That’s how much we mobilised to Scale Up Renewables in Africa after our long year campaign. Africa’s clean energy future is taking off. It will create thousands of good jobs. Provide electricity to millions across the continent. And make our entire planet healthier.”
